Tickle n Flex
…I know most of your minds are in the gutter… but the title of this entry probably has nothing to do with what you are thinking. :) This morning Richard “flexed” his left quad/thigh! This is the first real movement on his left side! He had wiggled his toes two different times on his left, but it has been a while. And this isn’t a flex that is taking him tons of effort; he can do it when he wants....

Days 9 * 10 * 11
Day 9: On Wednesday, Richard had surgery on his left elbow/arm/wrist/hand. The surgeons came by lots of times the day before and day of, because none of them had ever seen anything like his arm before. As I mentioned in my last post, it was “literally in 50 pieces.” (Something we had originally thought was a figure of speech for “your arm is messed up.”) The orthopedic surgeons were actually...

highs and lows
Yesterday and last night proved to be a hard 24 hours… But it was Richard’s birthday, so there were definitely some bright spots. The nurses made some exceptions and let him have visitors yesterday! Some came and it was a bad time, some came and he was able to say hi for a minute. His room is now filed with balloons and cards, and I know it helps him to actually see your expressions of love....

21 Down
Today is Richards 21st Birthday! His room is filling with balloons and cards. He loves it. Thanks so much for your support. And he has loved having us read his facebook wall to him :) Thanks for the birthday greetings! One of the nurses said they were sorry he had to spend his birthday with them. He told her that he would have probably ended up here tonight anyways. :)
This morning was a little...

...And This Little Piggy...
…Moved!! This morning Richard wiggled his toes! On both legs! Pretty exciting!
He had just come out of a really rough night. Kept dreaming/hallucinating that he was at work. When George would try to get him to “snap out of it, and calm down,” he would get really upset. So for most of the night, George had his first food-service experience, as he and Richard waited on most of the...

Waiting...
Yesterday Richard was moved to another floor. Yay! He now has a room with a door… and a roommate. I’m pretty sure the roommate (a tiny 70 year old black man with some sort of breathing problem) will be requesting to either transfer or die within the next 24 hours, simply because Richard is very alert now and is quite verbal. I looked over and smiled at the roommate today while Richard was ranting...

HUMBLED

My dear friend Kristie wrote and set up the following:

Turtle Face and Orange Jello
Today Richard is doing well. The fever that he had yesterday is gone and he now has a little green light by which he can control his morphine. I think he is hitting every 8 minutes, which is when it resets. His vision is limited and blurry today due to the meds, so he has still not seen his injuries. When I came in this morning, I identified myself and let him know I was here. He said:...

The Bionic Man
Richard is now out of surgery for this Tibias (bottom of his shin bone), Feet, and Ankles. The surgeon (who my mom and aunt now have a huge crush) told us that there were just too many breaks to count, but that his breaks were almost identically. In that each foot/leg had symmetrical injuries. Nothing Dr. Dimples had ever seen before. Richard apparently landed on both feet at the same time....
Update on Richard
Thank you for your prayers and support for my brother Richard the last few days. I know so many of you don’t even know what happened or what is going on, but have emailed, texted, and called to convey your support and love… and we thank you. We know that the few details out there have been vague to everyone but our family, simply because it has taken two days for the doctors to really...

Sidebar: when i was single, i asked DM on a date. twice. i was of course, rejected. i do not want to ask him on a date now. for many reasons, namely because i am married… to a guy who is not as awkward. (as a quirky awkward person myself i can say this with authority: “dont ever date or marry someone as awkward as yourself. if you do, you will never have...
