farewell my son
I am sitting at my desk…blogging. Hard at work in my first week back after 10 months of mommying-at-home. First thing on the agenda: Don’t set the bar too high. So, I have not come in before 9am. Second on the agenda: Figure out how to fit a pack-n-play in my cube. I think if i brought my son to work, I could feed him in the break room and nurse him in a handicap stall… and I...

dance, dance, yeah.
I love to dance. Love it. Even when I was 7.5 months pregnant I was gettin low at wedding receptions. My husband has often said that “he married Awkward,” and is embarrassed of me in a variety on contexts; wedding receptions being one where he literally will not claim me. I guess because in other venues where I dance, those in attendance may never see us again. But a wedding, not so...

ball and chain
So, it is apparent that now, as a parent, I am no longer on time. I mean, I can’t even meet my own deadline to waste time blogging. Sheesh. I used to never understand why my friends who had kids ran late to everything. I now realize that when they showed up, to anything, it was an unrivaled feat. So, be in awe next time you see me in public. Especially before noon. My teeth may not be brushed,...

oh blog.
So, it has been a longtime since i have blogged. not that i have time for blogging. and not that you noticed or missed my posts. not digging here—just observing that no one has approached me about my lack of long stories with occasional points… however, since September 30, 2010 when our son was born, I have been thinking and experiencing many things that have been enlightening,...

Standing
Yesterday was a big day in the Jui/Corbett House.
We had a fun live-web interview last night with the KidStuf Team from all 3 campuses of our church. They did an amazing job! There were tons of people watching from all over… 10 different countries were even tuned in! It was a good time and we hope just a little bit of our story can encourage those going through difficult times to trust...
Tomorrow, April 19!
Tomorrow is a big day! Just wanted to let you all know!
1… We go tomorrow to see the surgeons who did Richards leg surgery, for xrays, etc… to see if he can begin to bear weight on his legs. Everything was healing well when we went last month, so we are hoping for a great report tomorrow! If he can begin to bear weight, he will most likely start rehab at Shepherds Center on...

Helping Hands
It has been a while, so a brief update is in order:
- Richard is home! All is well so far.
- We are learning how to execute our training in our house, which is challenging at times, but we are getting the hang of it.
- Richards blood clot remains in his leg, which is of course a good thing. His blood test yesterday revealed that his blood is good. No hep. Just kidding.
- Traveling is a little...
"Up-ers"
At the “one month mark” of Richards accident, we are grateful for so many things.
Thankful for Richards life. His attitude. His heart.
Thankful for supportive friends, family, workplaces, and church family (Buckhead Church)
Thankful for committed individuals who went to 1000’s of hours of class and school to learn how to be the kind of medical professionals that can skillfully...
blown away.
Margaret Mead, the anthropologist said: “Never doubt that a small, group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” …And we are blown away at how you guys have changed our world! Honestly, when I put the “wish list” up on Saturday, I never dreamed that everything would get taken within 50 hours! I will never doubt you again! J Thank you all...
Practically Speaking
Alright! So, Richard will be home in 1 week. (see last post). Super-excited! We just found out yesterday that we’ll need a variety of items, as well as a few other items that will just be super helpful once he is home.
Many of you have been asking what you can do to help with Richards home-coming. And practically speaking, it would be amazing if yall could help us out with the list below....
Shepherds and Stuff
Today is ‘day 5’ for Richard here at Shepherds Center. It has been a whirlwind for him. His first day consisted of sonograms, x-rays, tests, and multiple evaluations… including being measured for a motorized wheelchair. They took into account his injuries, size, etc, and by the next morning, had built him a chair that he can operate with just his right hand. By day 2 he was up in the chair and...
411!
Yesterday Richard had his 3rd, and hopefully final, foot/leg/ankle surgery. Everything went well. He now has internal plates and screws in both legs. He has large, fashionable splints on right now. Looking forward and with the best case scenario, in 2 weeks, they will take off Richards leg splints and remove the “staples.” Which sounds just lovely. At this time (in 2 weeks) they will...

Tickle n Flex
…I know most of your minds are in the gutter… but the title of this entry probably has nothing to do with what you are thinking. :) This morning Richard “flexed” his left quad/thigh! This is the first real movement on his left side! He had wiggled his toes two different times on his left, but it has been a while. And this isn’t a flex that is taking him tons of effort; he can do it when he wants....

Days 9 * 10 * 11
Day 9: On Wednesday, Richard had surgery on his left elbow/arm/wrist/hand. The surgeons came by lots of times the day before and day of, because none of them had ever seen anything like his arm before. As I mentioned in my last post, it was “literally in 50 pieces.” (Something we had originally thought was a figure of speech for “your arm is messed up.”) The orthopedic surgeons were actually...

highs and lows
Yesterday and last night proved to be a hard 24 hours… But it was Richard’s birthday, so there were definitely some bright spots. The nurses made some exceptions and let him have visitors yesterday! Some came and it was a bad time, some came and he was able to say hi for a minute. His room is now filed with balloons and cards, and I know it helps him to actually see your expressions of love....

21 Down
Today is Richards 21st Birthday! His room is filling with balloons and cards. He loves it. Thanks so much for your support. And he has loved having us read his facebook wall to him :) Thanks for the birthday greetings! One of the nurses said they were sorry he had to spend his birthday with them. He told her that he would have probably ended up here tonight anyways. :)
This morning was a little...

...And This Little Piggy...
…Moved!! This morning Richard wiggled his toes! On both legs! Pretty exciting!
He had just come out of a really rough night. Kept dreaming/hallucinating that he was at work. When George would try to get him to “snap out of it, and calm down,” he would get really upset. So for most of the night, George had his first food-service experience, as he and Richard waited on most of the...

Waiting...
Yesterday Richard was moved to another floor. Yay! He now has a room with a door… and a roommate. I’m pretty sure the roommate (a tiny 70 year old black man with some sort of breathing problem) will be requesting to either transfer or die within the next 24 hours, simply because Richard is very alert now and is quite verbal. I looked over and smiled at the roommate today while Richard was ranting...

HUMBLED
Many of you have contacted us on ways that you can help… We have been blessed by all of your love and support. Here are a few things that can help us in a big way.

Turtle Face and Orange Jello
Today Richard is doing well. The fever that he had yesterday is gone and he now has a little green light by which he can control his morphine. I think he is hitting every 8 minutes, which is when it resets. His vision is limited and blurry today due to the meds, so he has still not seen his injuries. When I came in this morning, I identified myself and let him know I was here. He said:...

The Bionic Man
Richard is now out of surgery for this Tibias (bottom of his shin bone), Feet, and Ankles. The surgeon (who my mom and aunt now have a huge crush) told us that there were just too many breaks to count, but that his breaks were almost identically. In that each foot/leg had symmetrical injuries. Nothing Dr. Dimples had ever seen before. Richard apparently landed on both feet at the same time....
Update on Richard
Thank you for your prayers and support for my brother Richard the last few days. I know so many of you don’t even know what happened or what is going on, but have emailed, texted, and called to convey your support and love… and we thank you. We know that the few details out there have been vague to everyone but our family, simply because it has taken two days for the doctors to really...

Sidebar: when i was single, i asked DM on a date. twice. i was of course, rejected. i do not want to ask him on a date now. for many reasons, namely because i am married… to a guy who is not as awkward. (as a quirky awkward person myself i can say this with authority: “dont ever date or marry someone as awkward as yourself. if you do, you will never have...
